What happens when a national icon meets his biggest fan? Jerusalem documentary filmmaker Eli Tal-El grew up seeing Theodor Herzl as nothing more than a static portrait on a classroom wall. But his Canadian brother-in-law, David Matlow, sees a visionary superhero—and he has a private collection of 3,000 Herzl artifacts to prove it. For his 50th birthday, David drags his entire skeptical Israeli family to Basel, Switzerland, to retrace the steps of the First Zionist Congress. Packed with humor, rare historical insights, and heartwarming cultural clashes, My Herzl is an unconventional look at a man who changed the world, and a family discovering what his legacy means today.
